Premier Doug Ford of Ontario meets with his counterparts in Muskoka to discuss trade, tariffs, and significant projects.
At a time of increased concern over trade and tariffs with the United States, Canada’s closest trading partner, premiers of Canada are beginning a three-day summit in cottage country in Ontario.
All 13 provincial and territorial premiers are being hosted by Ontario Premier Doug Ford in Huntsville, Ontario, which is roughly 220 kilometers north of Toronto. Meetings are scheduled to begin on Monday.
They will be joined by Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday to give an update on trade talks.
Shortly after Donald Trump threatened to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods that do not comply with the current Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade, or CUSMA, Carney announced his attendance.
Premiers will meet with Indigenous leaders on Monday, but the primary focus of the meeting is likely to be trade and tariffs. They are anticipated to sign additional memorandums of understanding aimed at removing trade barriers between provinces in the afternoon.
As part of the biggest push to liberalize interprovincial trade in modern history, provinces have been signing a range of MOUs to indicate their intentions to change their laws and regulations.
As a way to combat U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, all provinces have indicated a willingness to work on removing current trade barriers, which one study estimates cost the Canadian economy $200 billion yearly.
At a time when ties between the provinces and the federal government seem to be warming up, Carney will meet with the premiers on Tuesday morning.
After meeting with Carney in June, the premiers departed with remarks about “great collaboration, great communication” and unity.
The deadline for the federal government to finalize a new free trade agreement with the United States is August 1. Carney said last week that it is unlikely that a deal without tariffs will be reached.
“New Brunswick is eager to see this uncertainty eliminated, so we’re looking forward to hearing an update on the negotiations with the U.S. and how those trade talks are going,” stated Premier Susan Holt of New Brunswick on Friday.
Following the passage of the federal government’s Bill C-5, which aims to expedite projects of national importance, premiers are anticipated to talk about U.S. relations and internal trade, international trade diversification, and how to construct major projects.
They are also anticipated to talk about public safety, health, immigration, labor mobility, wildfires and emergency management, and Arctic security.
